You know one thing I really love about Samsung Android devices? They never really lock the bootloaders. Why do I love that? Because Root usually comes very soon after release of the device, or in the case of the Note pretty much at release.
I just got my Galaxy Note, so naturally the first thing I wanted to do to my my brand new handset was invalidate it's minty-fresh warranty.
Now that I've done that, and can live up to our guarantee that we only do guides for things we've done to our own devices, here are the spoils for you: a guide on how to
...also we also have video guides to supplement these written ones on our YouTube channel!
Prerequisite disclaimer pre-reading here.
ROOT GUIDE METHOD ONE:
- Recommended method, does not increase the flash counter so you can return the Note to stock if needed for warranty purposes.
First of all, here is a video guide to illustrate the written instructions:
...and now here are the written instructions:
Here is a list of things you will need:
- A fully charged Galaxy Note
- A micro USB connection cable
- A Windows PC (I have no experience with doing this on a mac, so for now the guide will only cover Windows)
- The PC will need to have the USB drivers for the Galaxy Note installed:
- If you simply connect the Galaxy Note to the PC with the micro USB cable it will install them
- To be very sure your device will be recognised by Odin connect twice - once with USB debugging enabled, and once without - different drivers are installed depending on the status of debugging (USB debugging is in Settings --> Applications --> Developement)
- If you're still having no luck try also installing the latest version of Samsung's Kies
- The InitialCFRootflasher.zip here
- The correct Chainfire Root kernel from here. In order to get the correct one for your firmware you need to go to Settings --> About phone and look at the kernel version. There will be a string there that looks something like this: 2.6.35.7-N7000XXKJ4-CL641703. The bit you need to note down is the text I've helpfully highlighted in yellow. When you look at the file names in the CFRoot post that is linked to here you want the file that corresponds to that, for the KJ4 firmware the filename will look like this: CF-Root-SGN_XX_XEN_KJ4-v5.0-CWM4.zip.
- Quick update for those finding that their current firmware does not have a corresponding CFRoot kernel: flash a pure stock one with CFRoot support in Odin and you're good to go. Shouldn't increase the flash counter, but even if it did there is now the TriangleAway app from Chainfire to reset it. Happy flashing.
OK, once you've assembled all the required bits follow these steps:
- Unzip the InitialCFRootflasher.zip
- Unzip the CFRoot kernel, you'll get a .tar file, unzip that file and you should have a zImage file
- Right click the zImage file and select copy
- Open the folder where you extracted the InitialCFRootflasher.zip to, within that directory there should be a folder called zImage - paste the zImage file you copied into this folder
- Back out of that folder and you should see a file called "not-rooted-yet.bat" - open that file and you will be greeted with the program that will install the CFRoot kernel and Root the phone
- Connect the micro USB cable to the phone, and then the computer - just plug it in - do not do anything else at this stage
- If you look at the "not-rooted-yet" screen you will see a check list of things that you need to make sure you've done - if you've followed this guide to the letter then you should be good to go, but just run through them again to be on the safe side...
- Now simply follow the instructions within the "not-rooted-yet" screen - first you will see a story about the zergling's progress breaking past your phones security (this will take a few minutes), if that is successful you'll be prompted to hit any key again to install the CFRoot kernel - at the end of that flash your phone will reboot
- Congratulations, your Galaxy Note is now Rooted! You should now make a Nandroid backup, and also a backup of the EFS folder in your Galaxy Note immediately. Guide for these things is here.
Simples right?
...or maybe not? If you have any feedback about how you think we can improve these instructions, please let us know in the comments below.
If on the other hand you found these instructions were just what you needed to Root your Galaxy Note, feel free to let us know in the comments below also (along with showering the article with all the customary social media ways of saying thank you while you're at it).

ROOT GUIDE METHOD TWO - NOT RECOMMENDED:
- Only follow this guide if your Note already has no warranty and you'd prefer to use Odin because you are already familiar with it
Just to be crystal clear: If you flash via Odin as we demonstrate in this guide there is no way to reset the flash counter. That means that your warranty is irreparably void, you cannot return the phone to a stock state for warrany purposes. You've been warned.
Here is the video guide to supplement the written instructions below:
Here is a list of things you will need:
- A fully charged Galaxy Note
- A micro USB connection cable
- A Windows PC (I have no experience with doing this on a mac, so for now the guide will only cover Windows)
- The PC will need to have the USB drivers for the Galaxy Note installed:

- If you're still having no luck try also installing the latest version of Samsung's Kies
- A copy of a program called Odin - you can download it here
- The correct CFRoot kernel from here
Alright, now we've got all those things assembled, it's time to void your warranty! Here are the steps you need to follow:
- Start Odin, it should look like this:
2. Click the button "PDA", shown in the picture below. Navigate to the CFRoot kernel you
downloaded earlier and select it
downloaded earlier and select it
3. Make sure "Repartition" is NOT checked
4. Power down your phone, and then put your phone into download mode. Do this by
simultaneously pressing and holding the Volume Down and Home buttons, and then
while holding these buttons down press and hold the power button down until this
screen appears:
4. Power down your phone, and then put your phone into download mode. Do this by
simultaneously pressing and holding the Volume Down and Home buttons, and then
while holding these buttons down press and hold the power button down until this
screen appears:
5. Follow the instructions on that screen and press the Volume Up key to proceed into
download mode, you will be greeted with a screen that looks like this:
6. Connect your phone to your computer with the USB cable, after a few moments
Odin should recognise the device and look like this:
8. Odin will flash the kernel to your device, and at the end you should see this in Odin:
9. Your device will reboot, disconnect the device
13. Congratulations, your Galaxy Note is now Rooted! You should now make a Nandroid
backup, and backup the EFS folder in your Galaxy Note immediately. Guide for that is
here.

ReplyDeleteHow difficult will it be to flash ROM's to this or any of the Galaxy line? I'm coming from an original EVO 4G running CWM; assuming that once you're rooted, it works pretty much the same way...?
I am a beginner with a brand new Gnote so excuse my stupid question:
ReplyDeleteWhat is the advantage of rooting an android phone if I don’t want to play games?
Links would be appreciated.
Thanks
noob question here, what can I do with a rooted Note other than remove bloatware? Is there something useful I can do with a rooted Note that I can't do with an un-rooted Note?
ReplyDeleteYour instructions and video are spot-on!
Lots of things:
ReplyDeleteEasily install the custom ROMs that will come - they will significantly improve the Note. ICS will come quicker to users with Root/who will flash custom ROMS also. Also flash lots of mods that will become available soon - better quality video recording, use volume keys as shutter keys, call recording, persistent UA change in the stock browser, bug fixes etc etc.
Backup your apps AND their save data with Titanium Backup so you can install them and keep your game saves/login credentials etc on your next phone (or after flashing a fresh ROM), or even copy your save data to other Android devices (like moving save games between phone and tab).
Use enhanced functions of lots of apps like Tasker/Widgetlocker and lots more (lots of apps are improved by the availability of Root privileges).
Awesome sauce! That worked perfectly! I needed to root so I can change the DPI setting, everything looks better now. Even the text overlapping of the Market is sorted now.
ReplyDeleteThanx a bunch!
SECOND NOTE?!
ReplyDeletesir can i ask a question?
ReplyDeleteafter i install the cwm and i will make a nandroid back up before rooting the phone.
if i restore the unrooted back up. Will i go back to became un root again and go back to out of the box state?
No, it will restore to the exact point at which the backup was made, after Root installation. If you have not yet Rooted your Galaxy Note please be aware there is a better method available now that does not increase the flash counter (important for warranty).
ReplyDeleteSince i have already done the old way before and then i had reset my phone after i had updated to 4.04 OS, if i were to try and root the new way is it impossible to cover up the ODIN version to protect warranty?
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeletefirst of all thanks for this SUPER guide.
I have a question as well ...
will I have any security disadvantage with the rooted phone? Will my phone be more fragile for attacks or worms?
how about the root password? will I need to change it?
tg
The only particular security disadvantage is that malicious apps may be able to get Root access, if you don't install warez and install reputable apps in the Market then it's not really an issue.
ReplyDeleteHi, thanks for this guide on rooting the galaxy note, I am one of the impatient and i have already followed your guide 3 days ago and used the method that voided the warranty, so is it possible to use the new method and get the warranty back in place..just asking thanks :-)
ReplyDeletePlease help!! I did everything correctly on the first method and it ran through the program fine with no errors and re-booted. But i have no root at all.
ReplyDeleteCan anybody help with this as it's my first rooting attempt and was getting quite excited.
Thanks a lot.
Sorry, i should have thanked you first for this guide which was very easy to follow even for a novice like me,
ReplyDeleteso Thank You!!. If you have any ideas on why i had no root after re-boot please let me know .
Paul.
Hi there, sorry I wasn't able to reply earlier - I've seen others report this at Chainfire's thread at XDA. Providing you've followed the guide everything should work, although I've seen at least one other person had to repeat the process before it would take. So, first suggestion, try again! Maybe double check USB drivers also, and that you have the right kernel.
ReplyDelete@Anon1 above: There is no way to return completely to stock (yet) if you've flashed with Odin - the flash counter will remain elevated. You can easily flash back to a stock ROM to remove the yellow triangle though - just flash a stock ROM back to your Note in Odin. Still hoping we get a fix for resetting the flash counter though, will keep readers posted if/when someone works up a fix for that (I too couldn't wait and have one Note with an increased flash counter and one without).
ReplyDeleteThanks for replying i have tried it twice with the right kernel KJ4 and USB connects OK. I will keep trying but just one question first, I dont need to be in download mode do i? because i have just done it while the phone is powered on normally. Thanks paul
ReplyDeleteNope, no download mode. When you connect the Note does the MTP thing start, or do you just get the USB connected notification?
ReplyDeleteYep,MTP starts and runs just like in your video I get no errors and reboots as it should but no root.
ReplyDeleteMine wasn't in MTP mode though, just the USB connected mode, maybe try with that one selected (in Settings --> Wireless and Networks --> USB Utilities).
ReplyDeleteYeah sorry i wasn't in MPT mode after all, but have tried both ways three times, not quite sure whats happening.Am i suppose to have something come up on my phone screen when it's rooting, apart from just my home screen.?
ReplyDeleteNothing else should come up on the phone - I think you'll have to ask at XDA developers in Chainfire thread, he may be able to help you. If he is able to sort out the issue can you let us know here what the fix is? BTW, do you have CWM recovery after finishing the process?
ReplyDeleteok thanks will do,yes i have everything ready ROM manager,SuperUser and Titanium Backup.Thats all the info from your'r blog's so thanks.
ReplyDeleteIt's coming up with Cant Find File Zimage at the end of root program even though it's un-zipped and in the right place listed as Zimage.
ReplyDeleteYYYYYEEEEEHHHHHHAAAAAAA We have lift off after 15hr;s , but it;s all good coz i;ve learned a hell of a lot about Android. Thanks NZ .
ReplyDeleteI THINK the problem was OPERA Browser switched to google after second attempt it ran like a dream. I;m going to bed now...
Awesome, congrats dude! When you get up perhaps you can clarify exactly what the problem was? Was it a problem with Opera on your desktop downloading the file?
ReplyDeleteThanks, this is the best prescription from a GP I've had for a long time.ok so i downloaded all the different links including your's through opera and non of them worked, it just could not find the zimage file, i then switched to chrome did everything exactly the same way and on the second attempt it worked thats all i really know, but i use iMac usually i did this on my son's PC so who know's what settings opera was in.I now have a new hobby so i'm sure i'll be back here soon, Cheers mate, paul UK.
ReplyDeleteSir very nice videos specially for noobs like me.
ReplyDeletecan i ask you if you can make a video on how to unroot the v2 of rooted galaxy note?
Sorry just posted a comment in the wrong place at one of your other blogs.paul UK
ReplyDeletei rooted using odin. I am selling my note away. When I try to reset to factory state i get a looping samsung logo screen.
ReplyDeleteHow can I fix this?
Noob question. Will I get the 'yellow warning triangle' after rooting with the recommended method and is this process reversible? Thanks
ReplyDelete@Bennyboey: How are you trying to reset to factory? I did that to the first Note by flashing a stock firmware from XDA with Odin - is that what you did to? If so the bootloop might just represent a bad flash - providing you can still boot to download try the Odin flash again (that's probably also the way to fix the problem if you did something else too).
ReplyDelete@Anon: Yep, you'll have the triangle since the CFRoot kernel you flash isn't Samsung-signed. There is a thread about unrooting at XDA, seems like that should be straightforward but I have not done that myself (perhaps another tutorial in order).
ReplyDeleteHi guys, i'm actually tempted to buy a Gnote but i hate Touchwizz (great hardware,not-my-kind of software. My questions are: once rooted can you install custom roms like htc sense ones? Can you still upgrade to ICS once its out or do you have to wait for a version of your rom to come out? and last, once rooted do you still got the full features of the SPen? Apps, writing, drawing & screenshots?
ReplyDeleteThank you very much.
Hello Sir, I rooted my Note using your well laid out method #1 instructions. Now that I have root what ROMs are out there that are compatible that would enhance/speed up my Note? There's just a bit of lag present that'd I'd rather not have. I've currently got KJ4 and GB 2.3.5 that came on my Polish unit. I see on XDA lots of Note ROMs but I see KK9, KKA and so forth but not sure if I can simply flash those on my unit.
ReplyDeleteAlso I'd like to not lose root doing so. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
@Machi: There aren't really any custom ROMs to speak of just yet, but they will come in time. In the interim just use a replacement launcher in order to get rid of TouchWiz - LauncherPro+, ADW Launcher, and Go Launcher would be the main ones people use. If you Root it doesn't change anything in terms of the phones functions, everything remains intact. Upgrade to ICS likely to come much quicker to Rooted handsets via XDA (for instance I got Froyo about 2 months ahead of it's official release for my Rooted Galaxy S last year).
ReplyDelete@Anon: As per earlier comments there really isn't much in the way of custom ROMs or mods/fixes to address anything at this stage. Which launcher are you using? TouchWiz and SPB Shell are both hardware accelerated, so they are smoother than other alternatives (of course once ICS comes out UI hardware acceleration becomes standard). The ROMs you're talking about are stock ROMs, the more recent of which may have some performance optimisations - Chainfire's Root thread goes into how to flash new ROMs using CWM so as not to increase the binary flash counter if you want to try them out.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the quick reply, I'm using Go Launcher EX which helps some. Yeah I've read a lot, Chainfire's thread too. I did think about trying one of the ROMs thrown about, as long as I don't fiddle with the CF's kernel I wouldn't lose root correct? That is if it's done they way it's described of course. :-)Think we've got a lot of the very same phones!! lol Thanks guy! USA
ReplyDeleteHi thanks for the really good guide. I rooted my note using chainfire method. I need to unroot as I need to send my note back to Samsung to be fixed. Please could you show us how to unroot? You will be a lifesaver!
ReplyDelete@Anon: If you follow Chainfire's instructions you should be fine! I'd just check that he has a CFRoot Kernel available for the one you update to, if anything goes wrong you can just redo the Root process.
ReplyDelete@jamo1080: Will definitely do that guide, but unfortunately it won't be for a while since we're getting into Nexus stuff now. If you check this forum at XDA there is a guide on unrooting that should help: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1349
Why not just use Superoneclick, it is so simple to use and very easy to unroot.
ReplyDeleteToo much effort and risk with other methods,
@Wesley: Not seen anything to suggest there is any risk involved here, if this process fails then the phone is unharmed. Please don't scare readers with misinformation. Will look into Superonclick, but hadn't seen stuff on that at XDA at the time I did this guide.
ReplyDelete@Wesley: Just looked into it - Superoneclick is just using the Zergrush exploit that the method in this gudie incorporates. It is no more or less safe that the method detailed here. May add it to the guide anyway, since some will like to use it.
ReplyDeleteok I got this but the only question is how to regain my warranty I mean ok I rooted lost my warranty as ppl said
ReplyDeletebut is there a way on how to regain it or not?
@Shndokh: It is possible to unRoot and make the phone appear completely stock for warranty - check XDA for how. I will get around to a guide here at some point too!
ReplyDeleteHi,
DeleteI had rooted my galaxy note as u mentioned above.
I lost my warranty and facing many problems could you please tell me how can i unroot and restore manufacturer settings and warranty for my galaxy note.
Kindly help me regarding this asap.....
hey my mail id is bhaskarunichiranjeevi@gmail.com forgot to mention in my previous post...
Deleteplease please please reply me and help me out......
thank u
hi, I am new, just bought a note,
ReplyDeleteIf you root what are the benefits, pls reply and thanks.
I have KKA and is KKA considered a new firmware? 'cause on chainfires thread(at xda) it says on step 1.3 "Using a newer firmware? Do this operation first, then flash the newer firmware back using CWM Manager. This is explained in Chapter 3 below."
ReplyDeletesorry for the uneducated question,lol
Great and easy to follow info.
ReplyDeleteThank u for bring me to the next level
My Q
I always had a jailbroken iphone
and i used a app (instalous) to download apps for free, i thought if i root my note that i could do the same, so does that mean that if u root your phone u can only change the theme or is there more.
Greetz Gerrard
@Anon1: KKA is earlier than KL-prefixed firmwares so you should be all good with the zergrush method here.
ReplyDelete@Anon2: There is lots more to do with Rooted phones - flashing custom ROMs with additional features and better performance and battery, using Titanium Backup to backup your apps AND their data (particularly useful for saved game data) for easy restoration to new devices or after flashing new firmwares, all sorts of mods and general tinkering is possible... It won't specifically help you with pirating apps (our website does not support piracy at all either for that matter), in fact installing pirated software on a phone with Root access enabled can be quite a risky proposition so be very careful (or better yet pay devs some money for their work!).
Hi NZtechfreak
ReplyDeleteMy Name is Rajesh.. I used your above said method 1 to root my Note and it worked with flying colors. But i can see a yellow triangle in my download mode after the root. Can you please guide me to remove this triangle.
Hi I cannot root my Galaxy Note.
ReplyDeleteI am getting this error.
Press any key to continue . . .

If all is well, CF-Root should be flashed
Your device should be rebooting now

Press any key to continue . . .
Excellent job (again!). I'm wondering if this has any impact on your recommendations on how to root the SGS2? Do you still recommend using CF-Root for the SGS2, or do you now recommend using something that uses the Zergrush exploit, such as DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit or SuperOneClick?
ReplyDeleteThanks AndroidNZ. I'm a newb to Android but I followed your guide and rooted my Note (KJ4) then did a Nandroid B/Up and Titanium Backup using the Pro version. Everything was great until I installed the latest firmware from Samsung (LA4) and now my Note is no longer rooted. I did a TB before the upgrade.
ReplyDeleteCan you please help?
Hi! I rooted my Galaxy Note and it shows a yellow triangle on the boot screen. how can I remove this?
ReplyDeleteAny Chainfire Root kernel for KK2? I am searching herre and there with no luck :(
ReplyDeleteHi, did you manage to find the chainfire root for KK2? i too have the same and looking for CFR for it
DeleteAssuming it's the same as the SGS2, then "near enough" will do. KK1 should be fine.
DeleteBut don't quote me on that.
Hi, great info, THANKS
Deletewhy the root password is open? Can't we change it to prevent others to get root access?
First time trying to flash. Stuck at the part of determining the right kerner. My phone setting states I am using KJ7. On xda website, I can only see KJ6
ReplyDeleteHi guys, quick word about unsupported kernels: flash a pure stock one with CFRoot support in Odin and you're good to go. Shouldn't increase the flash counter, but even if it did there is now the TriangleAway app from Chainfire to reset it. Happy flashing.
ReplyDeleteI got the chinese one, it costs me lots more where I brought it from, but it is also a gift so free!
ReplyDeleteBut I am worried to flash it due to it being with China Mobile, boot screen shows china mobile 3G on it, and the kernal is MKL4 and worse yet its not a GT-N7000 or the others its called a GT-I9228 so very worried to finally do this rooting....
Anyone else rooted one of these yet (I am new to this, but I cant seem to find the original file if something goes wrong to flash it back to factory seetings of China Mobile)...?
hey,problem here.
ReplyDeleteI've LB2 kernel and guys at XDA have got the kernel.
I did the InitialCFRootFlasher, went through the zergrush part, but then while pushing the zImage,it said cannot write: Permission denied.
rply asap. want to discover the world of custom roms.
thanks in regards buddy.
sorry..they don't have it..
ReplyDeletedowngraded and done..thanks a lot..
Awesome, glad to hear you're sorted!
DeleteHi,problem
ReplyDeleteI had a kernel KL3 when pushing zimage i got this
3374 KB/s <8387840 bytes in 2.427s>
--- flashing zimage
/dev/block/mmcblk0p5: cannot open for write:Permission denied
--- cleaning up
--- rebooting
If all is well, CF-Root should be flashed
So after that the phone goes off and on, and i can find any CWM application but my kernel is changed to LB2..
Any help from you sir will be very appreciated
Yannis
I have some questions... First time android user obviously with these questions.
ReplyDelete- Should I root my Note now or wait for ICS?
- If I root will that stop the device's ICS samsung update from happening?
- What is the difference between root and rom and all these other terms I am hearing.
I'm a quick learner and have had lots of success modding and my iPhone, but just want a quick 101 question and answer session regarding what i should do ... Thanks NZTechFreek and any other guys that want to say their 10 cents...
If you Root now you probably won't get the official ICS updat from Samsung in Kies, you shouldn't worry about that because you'll get a CWM recovery flashable version anyways so it's no reason to delay Rooting. Root means having full access to your phone, making it truly yours and letting you alter system files and other parts of the phone/OS that are inaccessible to non-Rooted users (modifying them often mean you get extra features and optimisations unavailable to non-Rooted users (for example call recording, better video recording, silenced capture sound in the camera, using flash when battery less than 15% and much, much more).
DeleteHi newbie here and also got unsupported kernel...Is there a way u can make a step by step guide on how to flash a pure stock one with CFRoot support in Odin...Just wanna make sure I don't break my Gnote..Thanks in advance..
ReplyDeleteIf you look at XDA you will see lots of guides for exactly what you need. Unfortunately I'm not in a position to do a guide explicitly for that, so the best advice is read those threads until you understand what you need to do and then follow the instructions carefully. If you do that and have more specific questions by all means ask them here and I will try to help (obviously that is less efficient than making use of the massive community at XDA).
DeleteStill waiting for a reply please help me Nztechfreak
ReplyDeleteHi Yannis, sorry I missed your question earlier. Not sure exactly what you're asking? It sounds like the wrong kernel has been applied from what you've written - do you have Root? If you have Root and CWM you can flash whichever kernel you like, either the correct CFRoot kernel or another like Speedmod etc.
DeleteAndroid, thanks for the very nice you tube and blog post combination whic is making this process understandable for a novice. My SGN has a recent 'unrootable' kernel - 'LB2' so I am hunting the file sgn_xx_oxa_kj1_factoryfs.zip as per Chainfire's posts and yours. All the links provided are broken and the megauploads site seems to have died permanently. Any thoughts as to where I cn find it.
ReplyDeleteMy other thought was to use odin to insert one of the other available early kernels that Chainfire provides but this is not described by you or him and I'm not sure what the results might be.
Cheers again, Willo
Hi Will, I would ask someone at XDA to upload a mirror download for the kernel you require (sorry, I don't have it, more collateral damage from the Megaupload fiasco sorry). I would be fairly certain someone has one they can upload for you.
DeleteHi, I have a display Kernel Version of "2.6.35.11" that is all that is displayed where your kernel version has more numbers and letters. Is there another way to see the rest of the kernel's numbers and letters?
ReplyDeleteHi NZtechfreak, my Kernel is 2.6.35.7 "LA2" so which Chanfire is correct for me to root my device? please help..!
ReplyDeleteHi, I have already bought my Galaxy note N7000 and I used odin to install arabic language so would you please tell me how can I get return the Note to stock for warranty purposes?
ReplyDeleteThank you in advance
I'm trying to root my galaxy note.It is found that i need to downgrade to any of the rootable versions of ROM. I have downloaded the KJ1 stock ROM from DR Ketans guide. He has not mentioned whether i need to backup my data before
ReplyDeleteflashing it via PC odin.
Should I backup or its not needed for stock ROMS.
If I need to tell me how to backup.
Thanks for these clear and easy instructions. Even so I am really struggling to root my Note.
ReplyDeleteKernel is 2.6.35.7-N7000XXLA6-CL907341.
I Tried downgrading using chainfire's "SGN_XX_OXA_KJ1_FACTORYFS.tar" and Odin but Note will not go into download mode using 'power on + vol down + home'.
Tried anyway without download mode and odin just tells me " All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)"
Any suggestions?
Reposting here for those (like me) who don't watch videos much:
ReplyDeleteAs some others have mentioned, I've had this during the Zimage write:
/dev/block/mmcblk0p5: cannot open for write: Permission denied
Consequently it is not rooted after reboot. I'm using LC1 ROM on a brand new phone which updated itself to that level ok. Forum post 1482937 on xda-developers suggests it might be my PC virus scanner but repeated attempts from scratch with it off hasn't solved it. USB drivers seem ok, Kies installed. Clues welcome!
Ok, the cause of my problem is that ROMs newer than KL6 (thus LC1 too) cannot be rooted using the simple approach 1 above. There are more complex approachs from ChainFire or Dr Ketan on xda-developers involving first downgrading the firmware to KJ1, rooting it (if not already), then using CWM to upgrade to a rooted LC1, or whatever your current/desired version is. It is necessary to hunt for the right ROMs and think and plan carefully. But it's all there in the key threads from those authors.
DeleteDear NZtechfreak
ReplyDeleteMy kernel ver is 2.6.35.7-N7000DXLC2-CL1039404dpi@DELL171 #2.
May I check if any1 have rooted their samsung note based on the LC1 found on the link below(with method 1 instruction mentioned above)? If yes, anything that need to be aware pls? Many thanks in advance!

I have samsung note gt-n7000, android 2.3.6, kernel LB2.
ReplyDeletecan you tell me which version to install?
I would appreciate prompt answer
Hello Experts of rooting,
ReplyDeleteI have Samsung NOTE gt-n7000, android 2.3.6, kernel LB2.
can you tell me which version to install to have the best rooting possible?
I would appreciate prompt answer!!!
Flash KK1 stock ROM, available here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997 and then follow instructions as per above.
Deletenice guide.. it worked well. Thanks
ReplyDeleteGreat! Glad you're sorted!
Deletei am currently on breaderbread LC1 unrooted. Can I just flash with "CF-Root-SGN_XX_ODD_KL3-v5.0-CWM5.zip" from ChainFire's thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19030747&postcount=4) to get root?
ReplyDeleteI saw some tutorial requiring me to downgrade, then root . And upgrade again. Confused...
OMG
ReplyDeletei spent like 2 weeks searching how to root my galaxy note and all i found was as complicated as if it was written in alien language :D
but your guide was really a piece of cake and went well and my bote is now rooted !
can't find the words to thank you man :)
I think you did just find the words :)
DeleteThanks for the feedback, really appreciate it!
i am a beginner sir , i need to ask something , i have a samsung galaxy note , GTA III which is a HD game runs properly ! but i failed with fifa 12 and nfs hot pursuit , graphics problem, isearched over and finally came to a conclusion that it was something related to chainfire 3-d (my phone is not rooted yet, i guess you have 2 methods for that , i would like to view the more easier of the two)
ReplyDeletethen i got your post so you think invalidating the warranty is worth it ? what if tomorrow the ROM doesn't respond , the samsung service support , will they help ? because i have actually rooted my phone , or call it actually much more simple i am using a pirated version of android on my phone ?
please if there is a way , which will maintain my warranty in-tact , that method of yours will be highly appreciated , btw i have more expertise in flashing roms to windows mobile devices , for android it is still early days ! your response will be highly appreciated thanks ! @NZtechfreak
Hi there. I´d like to know if once rooted I could recover the pictures I had in my Galaxy note´s internal memory since they got ereased accidentally. I found a program (undelete) that is supposed to get them back in rooted mode. Thanks
ReplyDeletehey the cf kernal dont work for me
ReplyDeleteHi, i rooted my note using the method one guide. thank you for your time, knowledge and effort. love the extra control you goet from a rooted phone.
ReplyDeleteA software update check reveals an ICS update is available.
How do i go about doing this without bricking the phone...do i need to do something like,
1. unroot (could you point me to an unroot guide after using your rooting guide)
2. factory reset
3. update to ics
4. root (root guide for ics please)
thank you very much
Arun (Auckland)
You mention a work-around for those of us whose Note will not show the full kernel value. It is not working...I assume I was supposed to use not-rooted-yet.bat? Didn't see anything else in there that might be what you meant. It is stuck on 'daemon started successfully'. Of course I cannot put a zImage file in there because I don't have the correct ChainFire Root Kernel. Please help!
