AndroidNZ's Week in Android News for 13 November 2011

Welcome to another Week in Android News. I just want to start off by saying that we are lucky to be living in such exciting times. The mobile industry is advancing at an incredible pace and we have innovative new ideas and products constantly being announced.

While we are currently reviewing the Galaxy Note fairly extensively you can expect things to ramp up in the coming weeks with the Motorola Razr arriving this week and hopefully the Galaxy Nexus in a few weeks.

On that note catch us after the jump for news, reviews and how to's for the week ending 13 November, 2011

News

Device & Technology announcements
  • HTC confirmed that Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich would be coming to 8 of their handsets in early 2012
  • Rumours of a powerful device, the HTC Edge point to Kal-El love coming in Q1/Q2 of 2012
  • Barnes & Noble announced a Kindle Fire competitor, the Nook Tablet
  • Asus finally had an official announcement for the Tegra 3 bearing Transformer Prime, causing at least one of AndroidNZ's editors to get very excited. A Brazilian site Ztop managed to get some hands-on time with the sleek device as well.
  • Nvidia officially announced the Tegra 3 (Kal-El) SoC to coincide with the Transformer Prime announcement. Anandtech have some great analysis here
  • Nvidia also released their Q3 financials showing a 4.9% increase in revenue from Q2 at $1.07 billion. Full press release is here.
  • Arm announced the  Mali T658, a GPU 10X more powerful than the Mali400 in the Galaxy SII, sadly it's not coming until 2013.
  • Adobe has decided to throw in the towel, killing their mobile versions of Flash and laying off 750 staff. It's not all bad though as they are now focusing on HTML5 and their Adobe Touch Applications which we will be reviewing soon (hopefully).
  • Our beloved Editor-in-Chief managed to get a Motorola Razr in his grubby mitts and is currently defiling unboxing it before Onslaught86 has his turn at reviewing the kevlar endowed beast.

On the Patent/Lawsuit front

  • Once again Microsoft is trying to turn a profit in the mobile market, which can be quite difficult with the current state of Windows Phone 7. Don't worry though; patents to the rescue - they have now approached Huawei to get a cut of their Android profits.
App News
  • Amazon Appstore was updated to match the Kindle Fire colour scheme along with some other enhancements. AndroidPolice have coverage here
  • Our favourite retro gaming emulator N64oid was updated to version 2.6 which supports high res texture packs. Check out the comparison below:
Zelda: Ocarina of Time with normal textures
Zelda: Ocarina of Time with Hi-Res textures
Interesting other stuff
Although not exactly news, Matias Duarte, Director of Android's User Experience wrote a great post on the Roboto Font designed for Ice Cream Sandwich. If you have any interest in fonts or typography then check it out.

Reviews
NZtechfreak continued his behemoth Galaxy Note review series, with part 2 of the review focusing on  entertainment, media and web browsing.

Included in the review was a comprehensive analysis of the video and audio formats that the Galaxy Note supports.
and a self titled connections medley showing the Galaxy Note hooked up to a plethora of devices

We had our usual Apps of the Week article where each of the editors came up with mini-reviews of their favourite apps which included:

  • Currency Converter which is self explanatory
  • Iris - A Siri competitor
  • Meteor Blitz - a classic space shooter
  • Speedtest.net - an internet speed analysis tool

How To's
  • While Onslaught86 has yet to receive his Motorola Razr, some other enterprising folk have already found a method for rooting the Razr. Expect a comprehensive how to guide from us in the near future.
  • NZtechfreak wrote and filmed a guide detailing a new and improved method for rooting the Galaxy Note. You can watch the video below and check out the article here

  • Once you've rooted your Note you might want to check NZtechfreak's guide for getting the Roboto font  there.
That's all for this week, we will have more exciting content coming in the next week and beyond (including Motorola Razr coverage) so stick around if you don't want to miss out.
