N64oid updates to 2.4 - multiple bluetooth controller support in tow!

This is definitely one for the emulator gaming fans out there - N64oid has updated to version 2.4. In addition to adding 0.1 to the version number, it also added support for multiple bluetooth gamepad connections, and true analog support (FWIW I'm not actually knocking arbitrarily adding 0.1, at least it makes more sense than most handset naming conventions - right Samsung?).

What does that mean? It means multiplayer Nintendo 64 gaming sessions. If you ever indulged in some 2-4 player Mario Kart or Goldeneye back in the day you'll know just how good this news is. If you missed that era in multiplayer gaming, you've just been thrown a retro gaming lifeline.

Adding extra controllers is easy - pair as normal with Bluez IME and then add them in N64oid and map the keys

Phonejoy controllers are available here
To get the most from this you'll ideally need two or more bluetooth controllers, and some way to output your devices display to an external monitor or television (although a tablet with a stand might do pretty good stand-in duty at a push). If you own an Android tablet with either Honeycomb 3.1 or 3.2, and any current games console, your chances of meeting all these requirements are pretty good. Most of these tablets have a method for outputting to HDMI, and in addition will support PS3, Xbox, and Wii controllers. Similarly if you own a stock Android handset, or flash a Cyanogenmod or MIUI ROM, then your chance at achieving emulator gaming nirvana are very reasonable.

The big question of course is whether the experience is good enough to make all of this worthwhile? Can your phone even run a two player splitscreen at more than two frames per second?

The answer? It's all in the YouTube video above...

N64oid can be purchased from an Slideme here (Slideme is an alternative to the Android Market).

...and here is my very own video demonstrating how to pair a Phonejoy with Bluez IME, the process is essentially the same for Zeemotes, BGP100, and iControlPad controllers also:

  1. Can you plz, plz post a vid on how to pair 2 phonejoy controllers? I bought 2 after watching your video and I was so excited. I've been trying for days to get 2 connected. I have no problem connecting and using 1 controller. Works great. I can pair either of my controllers at once but not both. I don't see that option in Bluez IME. I've gone directly in N64oid and tried connecting there in every imaginable combination of ways, back to Bluez IME, over and over and over again. I have an Evo 3D overclockable to 1.83 Ghz dualcore and don't even need to overclock to run smoothly on 1 player Mario Kart. Dying for 2 player. Plz post a how to for 2. Thanks so much for your time. 2. Hey mate. I just saw your video and I wanted to purchase those controllers right away but those are very difficult to get. Anyway, I was wandering if I get the originals sixaxis dualshock controllers from sony Can I pair them up with the SG2 the same way as phonejoy controllers do? And If it's possible what do I have to do? or does this multiplayer feature from N64oid work only with phonejoy controllers? Thanks for your answers. Cheers! and keep the good work.

  3. @Anon: Check the blog, we have a guide for how to use PS3 controller with the Galaxy S II (Root required, we have a guide for that too if you need it!). PS3 controllers can be hooked up the same :)

  4. Hello =)

I have a SGS2 on MIUI (2.2.24) . So n64oid works with 2 Wiimotes but i read that output HDMI is not possible with MIUI :/ (so i have not yet purchased the cable HDMI...).

    Problem:
The cable HDMI only works on Stock Rom (Touchwizz Samsung).
Bluetooth Wiimote seems only to work on AOSP Rom (like MIUI).

    So...Please help me =)
I need to play on my tv with two wimotes

(Sorry for my english, i'm not english speaking :s ; I hope you understand what i wanted to say).

PS: I use the last version of n64oid + Bluez IME (I try Wiimote controller too but it doesn't working for me with two wimotes at the same time)

    1. Sorry but no way around that limitation as far as I'm aware. It's either CM9/MIUI and WiiMotes but no HDMI, or HDMI but no WiiMotes. Time to invest in some Phonejoys/iControlPads?

    1. When I have time I will try and get onto that, but with One X now and S3 soon it likely won't be for a while yet I'm afraid...

  7. Hey mate,

Sorry to bug you but I was wondering if you were able to successfully map the C buttons to the right analogue sticks of your controllers?

I'm using a ps3 controller connected using the sixaxis android app and of course n64oid but have had absolutely no luck with properly mapping the c buttons.. I can get them to map to the right analogue but the stick still has the n64 analogue stick mapped to it for some peculiar reason.

For example: pressing the right analogue to the left will input a c-button left instance and also an n64 analogue stick left instance.

Any insight into how/if you managed to map the c-buttons properly would be great!

    Cheers,
    Dylan

  8. I've tried everything to use Sixaxis, but it only works in singleplayer. Choosing Multiplayer, I control the first player with both controller. After mapping the keys i can use different buttons for A and B for each player, but right and left don't work on player 2. Thanks!
