Samsung Galaxy S III: Connectivity demo video

Hi everyone!

I know a number of you are getting impatient for the second part of my review (don't worry, it's coming very soon!). I thought by way of apology in the meantime you might like to check out a little video showing many of the awesome connectivity options available to the Galaxy S III.

In the video I demo USB OTG extensively, showing PS3 controllers and XBoX 360 controllers working with it, along with USB audio, external storage devices, USB hubs, USB keyboards and mice, and then move on to give you one of the very first looks at MHL for the Galaxy S III and some of the things you can do with that.

If you haven't seen one of our connectivity videos before you'd better brace yourself, as you're about to discover a world of things you may not have known you could do with your mobile phone...

PS: After I shot this one I installed NOVA 3 to my Galaxy S III and worked out how to play it with a PS3 controller wirelessly with bluetooth via MHL on my HDTV. Let me know in the comments if you'd like a video to show that, and perhaps even a guide for how to set that up.

Something great happened to me today; I got the rather unexpected joy of being able to play with the Samsung Galaxy S III. The pieces fell together quite unexpectedly yesterday, when a nameless benefactor temporarily came into possession of an S3, and was kind enough to give it up for a couple of hours today (I don't think I could have been so generous, I would have been more in the "from my cold dead hands" camp I think).

Anyways, what follows is an account of my brief two hour experience with the S3, and some of my thoughts and early impressions. I unearthed a few things that nobody else has covered in relation to the S3, so I hope you'll enjoy it (you didn't think exFAT support was all I had for you, did ya?).

If you were with us earlier today then you'll have noticed that my update path to the official ICS release for the Note was less than smooth, but could have been far worse. Long story short: I'm on official ICS on my Note and its running well, for now at any rate.

As per usual I soon got down to testing some of the connectivity options at the Note's disposal with various peripheral devices. Not only were my findings very interesting for Galaxy Note owners, they also give us some additional and previously unknown insights into the connectivity options that we're likely to see enabled in the Galaxy S III.

I may be drawing a longer bow here than I did in my previous secrets revealed piece, but I think the conclusions will prove sound.

I just love really utilising the full potential of my mobile devices, be they phone or tablet, and I'm always surprised to see just how many users of these devices are unaware of lots of the really cool stuff you can do with them.

If a title ever needed to come with a decoder ring, it's the title for this piece. That's a stupid number of acronyms right there. The only thing that could be worse is a title 200 words long, which is how that headline looks if you don't use the acronyms [#rockandhardplace]. Luckily I'm blessed to have an amazingly tech-savvy readership, and you probably understood all of that anyways. Am I right?

If you're wondering what the heck I'm on about, there is this thing on the internet called Google that can help you. OK, I know that's a little harsh, but I'm soooo tired today! I just haven't got the energy in me to explain it all - even the two triple-shot espressos I just had weren't sufficient to raise the energy meter above empty. Fortunately I had a few scraps of energy earlier, and made this cool video to show you what those pesky acronyms mean. Check out the video below, enlightenment awaits!

If on the other hand  you totally got the whole title then you should also catch the clip, because it's truly awesome the stuff you can do on your phone these days, and it's never been better than it is now that phone screens have entered the HD age. In particular I'm really loving remote desktop use with Splashtop; with the high res screen it is finally a good experience on a phone (incidentally after shooting the video I spent some time in Splashtop via 3G today - barely any lag and could watch a video with sound - amazing!).
