Hi everyone!
I know a number of you are getting impatient for the second part of my review (don't worry, it's coming very soon!). I thought by way of apology in the meantime you might like to check out a little video showing many of the awesome connectivity options available to the Galaxy S III.
In the video I demo USB OTG extensively, showing PS3 controllers and XBoX 360 controllers working with it, along with USB audio, external storage devices, USB hubs, USB keyboards and mice, and then move on to give you one of the very first looks at MHL for the Galaxy S III and some of the things you can do with that.
If you haven't seen one of our connectivity videos before you'd better brace yourself, as you're about to discover a world of things you may not have known you could do with your mobile phone...
PS: After I shot this one I installed NOVA 3 to my Galaxy S III and worked out how to play it with a PS3 controller wirelessly with bluetooth via MHL on my HDTV. Let me know in the comments if you'd like a video to show that, and perhaps even a guide for how to set that up.
(and that's it for me for now, I'm off to frag some hapless players using touch controls in online multiplayer)
We can't turn off the phone display while MHL is active?
ReplyDeleteNo, same as before.
DeleteThis isnt a reply just wanted to know where you got the logitech android keyboard thats in this video as i cant seem to find it but i can find one for the ipad are they the same?? Im guessing not
DeleteCan i play any games with those controllers? and do u think will be able to play games wit 360 controller on the new htc 8x windows fone coming out?
DeleteYes please, a NOVA 3 demonstration would be brilliant....just though I'd ask while I'm waiting for your video to buffer : )
ReplyDeleteUploading guide to YouTube now.
DeleteI'm keen to see a guide on setting up a wireless ps3 controller
ReplyDeleteWill do one once review part two is complete.
DeleteHi NZ,
ReplyDeleteI would also love to see a vid on wirelessly hooking up a PS3 controller :-)
SCOOBY
See above, will do one soon (ish).
DeleteUploading guide to YouTube now.
Deletethis was WORTH the wait, THANK YOU
ReplyDeleteThanks for the video very surprised :)
ReplyDeleteWould it be possible to know how to install Taken and Mario on the galaxy s3, like in the video please??? Maybe some one knows a link or something like that.
Thankyou for ur answer
You need the emulator FPse from the Play Store, and then the ROM which you can rip from your own Tekken disc.
DeleteSome guidance would be tops....PLEASE
DeleteGuide for playing games that don't support gamepads is uploading to YouTube now, at some point there will be guides for setting up emulators too.
DeleteNZTechFreak what battery widget is that on your GS III?
ReplyDeleteBattstat.
DeleteHI.....
ReplyDeleteIts awesome..thanks for the review...got mine yesterday and have been playing with all time..I have one issue...i read all the posts...The thing is,am not so impressed witht he camera in low light conditions and even with flash...too much of grains..i dont know wht settings i have to do to make it right....am really pissed off..i know its not dslr cam to provide a fabulous picture..but comparing my S3 with my s2,s2 takes better pictures...what i wanted to ask is,can you please make a video of taking pictures with all mode and explain all the camera aspects..sorry for bothering..but i havent find out any good video about camera and its functions...thank you in advance..!!!! keep up the good work...!!!!!
Hi Vinod! I will be reviewing the camera in due course and cover photography in low light and camera settings there :)
DeleteFrom where you got this wall paper and battery widget? They are looking awesome. I think for the clock and weather you are using beautiful widgets. Am I correct?
ReplyDeleteCorrect about Beautiful Widgets. The wallpaper is from an app called Wallbase (great wallpapers app!) - if you search for Boba Fett in Wallbase you'll get lots of matches with that image. Once you get your image the app Image 2 Wallpaper is a good way to resize it properly for displaying onscreen.
DeleteI think for wireless connectivity of PS3 controller, you probably used sixaxis app? Am I correct?
ReplyDeleteHello I would like to know what logitech keyboar and mouse Your using? (model) tnx
ReplyDeleteIt's the Logitech for Android 3.1+ bluetooth keyboard, the mouse is their "for Android" one also. Basically any bluetooth keyboard and mouse with the bluetooth HID profile should work (I've used 3 different BT keyboards and mice with the S3 and all work).
DeleteIs it possible to connect a powered usb hub into the MHL adaptor to use HDTV out and external usb drive at the same time?
ReplyDeleteNo, MHL and USB OTG are mutually exclusive connections at the hardware level.
DeleteIt appears that Samsung has now stated that this is the very reason for the 11 pin MHL verus the previous 5 pin configuration. See press release today. http://www.androidcentral.com/samsung-offer-mhl-cable-adapter-galaxy-s-iii
DeleteWould it be possible for you to test this scenario?
Thank you!
"msung Galaxy S® III uses an 11-pin micro USB input, which allows it to support MHL output and USB on-the-go input simultaneously – an improvement over 5-pin capability."
DeleteCan you verify this NZtechfreak? :)
I've not been able to make it work, and I'm wondering whether Samsung have perhaps got another adapter up their sleeve for us to purchase...
DeleteI wonder if you unplugged the HDMI would it work as a powered On-the-Go cable?
DeleteThanks so much for this!!
That's it... goin 2 buy s3 tonite..
ReplyDeleteBtw great video.. One question though..
Does it recognize ntfs? If not will ntfs mounter work.. And plz tell what uve used 2 convert ur drive 2 fat32..
is it possible to connect 2 controllers and play a emulator game together
ReplyDeleteHaven't tried via USB OTG, but definitely with bluetooth ones. Check an earlier demo video at the blog with the S2 showing multiplayer :)
DeleteHello there, thanks for your demo the s3 is a connectivity beast i wanted to know if the s3 can handle 1080p hi10 content playback because it seems it can handle 720p hi10 no sweat. thanks for your dedication.
ReplyDeleteIt has no problems running about any video format you can toss at it. It's a beast even with the stock video player. Most other devices need DicePlayer or similar to play most videos.
Deletethank you for your reply but i wanted to know if it could specifically play the highly demanding 10 bit 1080p mkv clips
DeleteCheck my YouTube channel, the video playback demo is up. Sadly 1080p 10-bit is still too much.
DeleteThis SGS3 connectivity video is sheer madness - I love it. The SGS3 is coming to Canada on June 21st and I've been on the edge of the fence about it but this may push me over to get it.
ReplyDeleteDoes it support 500gb harddisk or can I add more gb?
ReplyDeleteIt can support higher capacity disks as well however you need to be careful as some drives uses more power and hence require an external power source. In case of this video he used Seagate which does not require the external power.
DeleteDoes sgs3 support 500gb hdd or cam we use more gb?
ReplyDeleteI would love a video showing how to get the ps3 controller connected via bluetooth!
ReplyDeleteWill be coming up.
DeleteUploading to YouTube now.
DeleteGreat Video and makes me a proud owner of Samsung Galaxy S3.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing i need now is the cable :-P. Is that a USB OTG Cable or will any MicroUSB to USB cable will do the job.
Please do tell.
Must be an OTG cable, a straight micro to USB adapter will not work.

Deletei just bought a micro-usb to female usb and its not working, tried both usb and external hdd, mouse, none works :/ what is needed for make it work? i tried with 2 different otg cables and none works, so pls can u tell me what i need to install for make it work?
ReplyDeleteNothing you need to install, it works out of the box. You must have a USB OTG cable though, a regular micro USB to USB adapter will not work. Assuming you have an OTG cable, does the phone give a notification when the cable is plugged in? If it doesn't the fault is with the cable. If it does then it may be that your devices are not operable with the S3, there will be some that are not.
DeleteOKay thats what i have done, i bought a just simple micro usb to female usb, and i think its not working like u said. But how i know the adapter is OTG? And i would like to know where i can get like this kind? what about this one --> http://www.ebay.ie/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200775325203&ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:US:3160 ?
Deletethx a lot for letting me know
If it says it's a USB OTG cable specifically you should be fine.
DeleteOh, make sure it is USB micro B type, the A type do not fit the S3.
DeleteGood morning from Argentina!
ReplyDeleteI was surprised with your show, despite knowing the capabilities of Android-OTG and MHL :)
I have a question: In minute 20:06, you show a browser that runs "apparently" in Windows, God, what is that!?? hahaha.
Thanks for the video!
EJ
It is Windows :)
DeleteIt's an app called Splashtop that lets you remote into your PC.
Hi, Congrats from Brazil!!
ReplyDeleteThis is a Great Video, and now i have sure, my next phone is the S3!
=)
HI there
ReplyDeletenice video
I would like to know what emulators did use in this video to play tekken and mario
thanks
N64oid (from Slideme.org) and FPse (from Play Store).
Deletehi i live in christchurch and i was wondering where did you get your USB OTG from? thanks heaps
ReplyDeleteYou really shouldn't show me things like this - I'm supposed to be SAVING money! There again, I have the S3, it'd be rude not to use it to it's full ability...
ReplyDeleteQuestion,
ReplyDeleteCan any hard drive work with S3. I tried using Western Digital Hard Drive and it is not working. Which one did you use in the video.
I hope you can help.
It's a Seagate in the video, also depends on which size drive you are using. Other users have reported that 1TB drives won't work because the power requirement is too high.
Deletehi all. can anyone help. my ps3 remote works perfectly with the phone but once i start fpse to play ff7 it does not function with the game. it opens the fpse menue and so forth but does not work with the game itself. any ideas?
ReplyDeleteIt lets you navigate menus and so forth because the system sees it as a natively supported gamepad, to use it in-game you need to configure the controls in FPse for it and map the buttons.
Deleteoh ok thank you. also are you familiar with splashtop and kainy? i have both and they both work well, but is there anything else that you would recommend?
DeleteI use Splashtop and find that great, have heard Kainy is also good (particularly for gaming if I remember correctly?). Anyways, Splashtop is the best I've used and when I started using it was the only one that properly handled external keyboard/mouse inputs, so is my preference.
Deletei have both. kainy developer is very good with help when you ask him and responds promptly. splashtop is very good i agree, but as far as i have tried them both kainy is much better for gaming and splashtop for all the other odds and ends. tanx again.
DeleteGood feedback, cheers. I will look into giving Kainy a run soon :)
DeleteHow do i connect my xbox controller??
ReplyDeleteMore info please, wired like the one shown here, or unwired? If wired then you need the app I use here - USB/BT control. No way to connect wirelessly that I am aware of.
Deleteyes the wired one and can u give me the download link for usb/bt control app thanks..
DeleteIt's in the Play Store, search for USB/BT and you'll find it (it is not available in all countries, if you are Rooted you can get around that of course).
DeleteHi,
DeleteFor wireless xbox controller do I need to have root access and a receiver plug into OTG cable for it to work?
Thanks!
is it possible to charge the phone while using the OTG?
ReplyDeleteNot that I'm aware of.
DeleteHi there, wow that video was great, so much packed in there I think I will need to watch it again. I have a question about connectivity to a Nexus 7 : could you do it and transfer files between the two? This would be useful as the N7 has small hard drive and doesnt have sd card slot or support proper USB OTG...
ReplyDeleteIf the Nexus 7 has a USB Mass Memory mode then it should be possible, but it may well not have this on stock as it will likely use the same MTP connection method as other ICS devices...
DeleteI will try it when I get my I/O Nexus 7 delivered next week.
DeleteCool, that would be great to know, love your site which I found recently > no churnalism just quality posts from people who know their stuff.
DeleteI have a Seagate GoFlex Satellite 500gb HDD and it doesn't show my files. says a mass storage device is connected and I'm formatted with ExFat. What am i doing wrong?
ReplyDeleteI have just read a Samsung PR that they moved to an 11 pin MHL to allow OTG and MHL at the same time!! any way we can see this in action, as this seems to be the holy grail, well for me at least.
ReplyDeleteI've read that too, not been able to do it.
DeleteAs the connectors are not part of he MHL group standard, it's just the commas trance to the various devices. We Will probably need a specific splinter, dock or breakout cable to achieve dual functionality. Either that or we are all missing something obvious.
ReplyDeleteNZtechfreak ,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, THANKS for all your work (reviews and stuff)
You really inspire me dude.
But I have a question, I believe almost XBOx360 controllers are wireless, and if I plug in the charger KIT (usb cable to connect to PC), but doing this, the USB/BT don't recognize the controller.
I don't know why...should it be recognized ?
best regards
Can you please post a link as to what hdtv did you use? Ive heard gs3 uses a different micro usb hdtv than its previous version
ReplyDeleteHello!!
ReplyDeleteIt's very useful your video and your blog is Awesome!! but I can't understand the part of wiimote. The wiimote pairing was from an app on market or directly from n64oid. If it was an isolate app, which one is it? can you post the link please?, because the apps for the wiimote that I find, google play says me that are incompatible with my S3. Thanks in advance =D
The app is WiiMote Controller, although it is probably better to do it with Bluez IME and the HID device plugin because Bluez IME plays better with N64oid (get Bluez IME and visit the devs website to grab the plugin).
DeleteJust wanted to take the time to say thanks for yhis extremely informative video on the Galaxy S3 connectivity options.
ReplyDeleteI have just one query regarding about playback of Hi10P video files or Bluray 720p encodes with FLAC using MXplayer. I cant seem to play these types of files without seeing a continous amount of stuttering Audio plays fine for a certain time then cuts out as well. I downloaded the Arm7 codec in hoping that it would resolve the issue but to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the great work your doin.
Hey there NZtechfreak!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all I would like to congratulate you on the great videos regarding the S3, as well as the Nexus ones. Great resource for connectivity options on these devices.
I would like to ask you about the cables. You answered to a previous poster that the USB cable must be OTG, which you followed with a link to eBay. I added this item to the Wishlist.
I would like to ask you about the MHL cable. I read above that Samsung S3 has 11-pin micro USB input, and other MHL cables would not work. I guess that means a purchase specifically designated for S3 should be made?
Thanks again, and keep up the good work!
Is it possible to use a wired xbox 360 controller while also using MHL? Maybe using a hub and/or adapter?
ReplyDeletewould like to know this too :D
Deletei just wanna use the galaxy as a console. :D
that means i need a gamepad and mhl. is gamepad possible without rooting? if not all games are working its ok ;D
greetings
Gamepads like the PS3 controller will work over USB OTG without Root, but game selection is very limited indeed (some good ones though like Shadowgun, GTAIII, Riptide, emulators). Wiimotes will work wirelessly over bluetooth without Root, but only with emulators for the most part. Keep an eye out for the upcoming Nyko controller - wireless and they are going to make it work with touch emulation ala Sixaxis Controller but without requiring Root.
DeleteThanks for the response one question I am most interested in is being able to use a wired xbox 360 controller with MHL. Thanks
DeleteWhile using the s3 with this original hdtv adapter the phones battery apparently is charging but the battery slowly keeps droping...
ReplyDeleteDoes the charger only provides power to the adapter?
It provides battery to the S3 as well, but MHL and the intensive uses it tends to be put to is very high drain. Depending on what you're doing the charge may increase or decrease very slowly, or stay essentially the same.
DeleteNZtechfreak, you've done some great videos, thanks. Could you possibly tell me what the mA rate is when you have it plugged in. MHL usually only charges at 500 mA, but I'm hoping this is more. I've called samsung and went to many different forums to get this question answered, and no one has been able to tell me. I use this app to test my mA. This help woule be greatly appreciated, as I'm trying to build a new accessory for all android phones, and would like to know how well it works with the GS3. Thanks

Hi, first off I love this video and your site. I just got my S3 four days ago and I am enjoying this phone so much. I have already ordered the USG OTG adapter but I do have a quick question for you. At the 8:59 mark on the video where you discuss connecting a ps3 controller, you show a Dell stand which is holding the S3 horizontally and the keyboard. I checked Dell's accessories but don't see this stand on Dell's website. What is the product part description and where did you buy it? Thanks in advance and keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteIt's actually an iGo Ultraslim Stowaway keyboard, Dell sold Dell-branded ones for a while. Sadly they are no longer made however. They do pop up on Ebay from time to time, but are expensive.
DeleteI was wondering if you split the micro USB-B cable you could use the OTG Cable and then since split could you then charge it?
ReplyDeleteDoes the version of the GS3 matter? The adapter I bought (http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B008FU34C8/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00) does not seem to work with my T999 (T-Mobile) S3 (well, actually it's T999V wind, but it's the same as the T-Mobile T-999)
ReplyDeleteI have a Verizon Wireless Samsung GS3 that is not rooted. Ever since I saw this video and many others, I had a question and I wondered if you could test it: Is it possible to connect an Xbox 360 wireless receiver into the phone and sync it with a wireless 360 controller and play games - any games, please make a list if you can - on a NON-ROOTED S3? It would be great if you could set up a how-to video/blog post for this. Thank you and please reply!!
ReplyDeletei bought an OTG cable form samsung it works fine with usb drives and mouse but its not able to detect seagate 1tb HDD which is of NTFS format.
ReplyDeleteplease help in making it work...
thanx in advance
NTFS formatting is not supported on the S3 by defauly, you'd need to either install a custom kernel with support for NTFS (there are several available), or format the drive to Fat32/exFat. Will still likely need an external power supply even after formatting issues are sorted.
DeleteHi NZtechfreak. I have a tried to use Logitech wireless keyboard with the GS3 and the unifying receiver. When it plugs in at the home screen, it works but if i use the browser or do anything else, it disconnects. Is this a problem with the phone or the OTG cable?
ReplyDeleteThat's a strange one, hard to know where the fault is in that chain. If you're able to I would try with a different S3/OTG cable to try and narrow it down.
DeletePlease help.. im trying to connect my 1tb Wd hardrive in my sgs3 and it just not load..whyy..
ReplyDeleteA 1TB drive will require more power than the S3 can supply, you'll need an externally powered USB hub (also the drive needs to be Fat32 or exFat formatted, it is likely to be formatted to NTFS by default - you can install custom kernels that will add support for NTFS if you want).
Deletehi, can i know which usb hub is good to use with galaxy s3?
ReplyDeletethanks,
Hi Robert! I don't think it matters much to be honest, providing the hub has its own power supply. For reference I'm using an i-Rocks one, you can pick them up cheaply on Ebay (they're readily available).
Deletethanks for reply! but i don´t know one thing..
Deletei have wirelles keyboard, mhl hdtv cable, funtion usb hub and i want use all together with my tv..
first i must connect mhl cable to the phone and when i connect hub across second micro usb, don´t work because dont have charge. when i connect mhl cable across standard usb, don´t work hub.
how can i use all things together? help me please..thanks
Hi, can me show how i connect mhl adapter and usb hub together. i have all things, but i don´t know how connect usb hub across mhl adapter. help me please..
DeleteHi Robert, it is not possible to use them together I'm afraid (I know Samsung have said it is, but NOBODY has been able to make it work, so I consider it impossible for the time being).
DeleteHello. Amazing Video! It's spread all over! Congratulations and tks! I'm doubt about hd connections. I have formatted my samsung 500GB to extFAT, but S3 says it's dammaged. Do you have any clue why s3 doesn't accept it ?
ReplyDeleteTks!
Leo
Hmmn, I did read somewhere that people were having trouble with exFat drives over a certain size. Perhaps try formatting to Fat32, ideally after connecting it with a power USB hub (if it doesn't have its own supply that is).
DeleteHi! I've already done it. First to extFAT (quick with W7). Then fast to extFAT. Then very slow formatting to extFAT again. And the message doesn't change. I haven't done root. I'll try with a powered USB hub. Perhaps do you know any app who could show me a nice and explicative message! Tks again!
DeleteMy wired xbox controller connects to my sgs3 but does not respond. Any answers?
ReplyDeleteYou need to use the app USB/BT Joystick Centre.
Delete@NZtechfreak- mann I have become ur fan.. Watched ur videos on YouTube olso... Semms like you just know EVERYTHING ;)
ReplyDeleteI have a s3 but I dont really use it.. Like u do
But I need some tips fr installing awesome games that can be played.. Because I have no damn idea about whr to start n how to start. My phn. Is BLANK
Need some assistance mann.
Would be really grateful :)
Thanks NZtechfreak, this video has probably saved me a few hundred dollars! I had no idea that the S3 was so capable. I was wondering where you bought your usb otg cable? Is it an official Samsung one (is there such a thing)? Thanks for your help.
ReplyDeleteBtw, nice to find another Headfier. ^_-
Hi.I have difficulty to detect the wireless usb mouse.Currently, the power cable from MHL converter is connected to powered usb hub.Until this step i have no issue, i can see the screen on my TV.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how u do that on your iRock powered usb hub.
Please help me
Deos it matter what country you live in as to what the galaxy s3 can do? Because I am have an issue conneting my ps3 controller. I have rooted my phone and everything.
ReplyDeleteHi.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant video, really well done. I have one question you may be able to help with. I have the microsoft USB wireless adapter so that I can use my wireless XBox360 controller with my PC. If i plugged this adapter into the USB OTG cable do you think i'd be able to use my wireless 360 controller with the GS3 (with the USB/BT remote application)?
Thanks. Simon
Guy...sorry but I need some help.
ReplyDeleteI have that cable that we need to use pen drives, mouse, etc...but my GS3 just shows one notification
"USB cable conected" just it and doesn't show nothin more. I have: GT-I9300 - Jelly Bean 4.1.2 - i9300XXELL4 (UK) - Rooted. I really do something more!?
Thank you
I have the keyboard, mhl to hdmi adapter and I have no idea how to connect my phone galaxi s3 to the tv and use the keyboard at the same time to see movies from my couch, can you please tell me what exactly do i need to do? my email is jerry_1169@hotmail.com thenk you so much!!!
