Windows Mobile increased slightly from 4.2% market share to 4.7%, a small but significant step marking the platform's first gain in over four years. RIM's market share, on the other hand, continued its drop from 16% down to 11%. Nokia's Symbian share fell, as expected, from 37.6% to 15.7% - the surprise is that it wasn't actually more, given its virtual abandonment by Nokia.
The future, according to Canaccord Genuity, is Android's with its smartphone share estimated to reach 51.9% by the end of this year, while Apple's iOS will have stagnated at 18%, Windows Mobile will have shot up to 10.6%, RIM's share will have dropped to 6.9% and Symbian expected to plunge to 5.9%.
So what about tablets?
Apple continues to rule the roost in tablet market share with its 63.2%, another undeniably great performance by the iPad. However, all is not golden in the Apple camp. Just one year ago, the iPad had a truly commanding 81.8% of the tablet market. Canaccord Genuity has more bad news for Apple though - it's predicting a further drop to 52.4% by the end of this year.
Conversely, Android's share has nearly doubled from 16.5% in 2010 to 32.5% at the end of 2011 and CG are predicting Android will have 41.7% of the tablet market at the close of 2012. One thing seems evident from the figures and trends reported - while the iPad had a spectacular start, practically pwning the tablet market as it grew it, the landscape is looking far less likely to be a repeat of Apple's absolute domination of the marketplace previously achieved by their now-ubiquitous iPod.
It must be acknowledged though, that Apple continues to take the lion's share of profits from the mobile marketplace, and is likely to continue to do so for the foreseeable future. The mobile wars are far from over.
