Jelly Bean.
It has arrived.
|
The news Galaxy S3 owners have been waiting for is finally here - as of now the official Jelly Bean update is rolling out starting with Poland. It will no doubt roll out over other regions in the coming days, but if you just can't wait to get a taste of Jelly Bean you can naturally download the Polish ROM - PDA I9300XXDLIB CSC I9300OXFDLI1 MODEM I9300XXDLIB -
here now and install it to your Galaxy S3 in Odin (or better yet, Mobile Odin using the EverRoot option to make sure that your Root privileges don't evaporate in the update process).

UPDATE: Just flashed this to my International S3 minutes ago, can confirm that flashing in Odin with EverRoot/inject Super SU/inject Mobile Odin and wipe went swimmingly. All up and running, completely perfect so far. Just running some benchmarks now and thought I would leave you with this one, a little something to show your iPhone 5 toting friends who seem suddenly to have started caring about benchmarks this week...
Finally!
ReplyDeleteSeems like it took forever right, with all the stable leaks to have been released already... Overall though a pretty good performance by Samsung to get it out this quickly.
DeleteHi there.do you have any ideas about when does official jelly bean 4.1 .1 update for Samsung galaxy s3 will hit .NZ?
DeleteHi do you know when will official jelly bean 4.1.1 update will hit NZ ?
DeleteSorry, no information to hand yet.
DeleteStep by step tutorial on how to do this? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteVery simple, download the zip file and extract it (the resulting file will be a .tar file). Copy the extracted tar file to the phones internal SD. Backup photos/apps etc as needed (particularly from the internal SD as this will be wiped in the flash process, best to Titanium Backup apps and data to external SD card and remove the card during the flash process). Install Mobile Odin, open it and then open the .tar file. Tick the boxes for EverRoot and both the wipe boxes, de-select the option to flash recovery, flash the firmware. Reinstall Titanium Backup and restore your apps.
DeleteToo bad that that the S3 Galaxy loses just about everything else.
ReplyDeleteI've just seen benchmarks scores on Anandtech and they are a landslide in favor of the iPhone5.
Browsermark: iPhone5 by a healthy margin
Sunspider: iPhone5 (well over 50% faster)
GL Benchmarks: iPhone 5 (more then a 100% faster)
Sad that the top-of-line phone that I paid premuim price for 2 months ago is so far behind today...
A few things, firstly, none of Anandtechs benchmarks are on an International S3 running JB. Post JB the S3 gets as much as 1830 on Geekbench. It gets about 1100ms on Sunspider, still short of the iPhone, but nowhere near 50% slower as you state. Something is off with GLBench results for Mali-GPU handsets in the most recent GLBench update - Tegra 3 and Adreno 225 phones are beating the S3 by a significant margin when in fact the Mali in the S3 is about 30-50% faster than the GPUs in those handsets. Once that issue is fixed then we'll be able to make sensible comment on the GPU comparison (I expect it will still favour the iPhone, since the iPhone has had by far the best GPUs every year at the time of their release). I haven't run Browsermark yet on Jelly Bean, since the site was down last night and this morning when I tried.
DeleteAnyways, overall it is hardly a landslide to the iPhone 5. Overall the iPhone 5 certainly has an edge in synthetic benchmarks. That said, synthetic benchmarks are just that, and I certainly have no cause for complaint in actual use on my S3s (US and International) running Jelly Bean.
Outside of benchmarks the S3 does an absolute myriad of things the iPhone 5 doesn't as well, so setting aside synthetic benchmarks I fail to really see a defensible rational for your sadness. Emulators, USB OTG, USB audio, NFC, Apt-X, expandable memory, support for FLAC files, better video playback, infinite customisability, a decent mapping solution, much better notifications...
Not likely to be too different, I would think a few bug fixes.
ReplyDeleteThat's great but need help here
ReplyDeleteI have a rooted s3 GT-I9300 XXLFB
Can I update my s3 with this polish release!? What is different between this polish release and the future release in france or anywhere else ?
If that is an international S3 you should be able to flash it with the process I described, yes. It will differ very little from other releases besides the CSC (country code), but the CSC can be changed if need be, or you can just flash another countries version over the top of the Polish one if there are any important differences.
DeleteThanks, just 3 more questions
ReplyDelete1- is the release in polish? Or English ?
2- will the phone be able to operate normally on non polish carriers and from different countries ?
3- how can I change the CSC !?
1. English (Polish language is just an option, it is set to English by default).
Delete2. Yes. I am running it on 2-Degrees in New Zealand and the vast majority of people on it are outside Poland on many different networks.
3. There is an app for that! Note: there isn't really any particular reason to need to change the CSC.
Sorry but something also come to mind; if I flash it, will I lose any of my data or apps installed on my phone? Or will it only upgrade my phone and keep all on it !?
ReplyDeleteYou should do a full wipe install, least likely to cause issues afterwards. Just use Titanium Backup to backup all your apps to the external SD, remove the card during the flash, after flash insert card, install TB from Play Store, restore all apps and their data.
DeleteWhat about root ? I will most probably have to reroot it right ?
ReplyDeleteNot if you use the Mobile Odin method I mention in the article and in more detail in comments.
DeleteWicked running through that, just with titanium back up.... I dont have an external sd, is it fine to just do a back up and transfer to an external drive then transfer back once flashed and get TB to restore everything?
ReplyDeleteYep, that works just fine (and in fact it is best to have a backup that isn't on the phone/external SD card, you know, just in case).
Deletenice cheers, so what about doing this to a NZ telecom branded phone? cant be bothered waiting for them to roll it out
DeleteShouldn't be any issues, all the same hardware.
Deletesafe that worked out all right but what's up with google now not working? getting network connection error and voice search doesn't talk back even with everything for voice enabled, looks like a few bugs cropping up for a official release
DeleteGoogle Now works perfectly for me, including voice output (I believe this only works if you set the language to US English, I fake an American accent and the accuracy is awesome). I've not seen other reports of Google Now not working - did you do a full wipe install?
DeleteYea not sure what went wrong, gone back to stock ICS now, I did use the free Mobil Odin and had to manually load the flash kernel?? Ended up having no push services, couldn't register the phone to samsung account and couldn't dial up the CSC changer with #272# etc. Ended up re flashing with full wipes and using normal Odin and still had problems, over all did'nt really see any improvements. Think I'll just wait for OTA from TNZ
Deletehi could you tell me if this process would void my warranty? i bought my phone about 2 days back and im not too keen on voiding my warranty yet. Also do you by any chance know any updates on when jb would come for nz and if it does could i just easily switch over? Just for the information, i have a INT.vers sgs3 i9300 ... thanks a ton for taking time to answer this!!! tc!
ReplyDeleteThis process requires Root, and Rooting the phone voids warranty (although it is easy to return the phone to a state where warranty is intact). When JB comes officially here it will be easy to switch over (could use the same process or flash it in Odin).
DeleteHey any Idea as to when will the JB be officially available in NZ. I have a telecom branded Galaxy S3(Not Rooted). I checked with telecom, but they have no idea.
ReplyDeleteNo idea I'm afraid, Telecom have proven very, very slow with updates on other Android handsets :(
DeleteI'd recommend not waiting and just flashing it on yourself, but I know not everyone is comfortable with that.
hehe iphone 5 has a ultra fast gpu but the screen is not as good as amoled interms of gaming samsung can beat iphone even it has a overclocked adreno 220 beacuse of the screen... what is the use of high gpu with a poor display... like playing modernwarfare with the latest video card using monitor... samsung oled is much better maybe too saturated but 100 percent better than ips...
ReplyDeleteHi so you have any ideas.when would official jelly bean 4.1.1 hit new Zealand?
ReplyDeleteSorry, no information to hand yet.
DeleteJust got the official Jelly Bean update OTA in New Zealand!!!
ReplyDeleteSamsung's October promise is kept
Nice! Seems like the rollout is nearly complete then if it is reaching NZ too. Enjoy! :)
DeleteWhat carrier are you on to get JB OTA
DeleteI'm on 2D and still get the message no update available
Will jelly bean be commng to the s2? Ive read on lots on internet pages that it will?
ReplyDeleteHi there!!
ReplyDeleteI bought the S3 in Dubai but later I came to know its made for South African telecom so I am still on 4.0.4 whereas all my friends got an automatic update of jelly bean. that's quite embarassing as I bought it much before them at the time of release. Samsung guys are charging me for changing the software but I don't like to pay as I have experience of hacking IOS, PSP, Android but want to be sure before playing with my S3. Any suggestions if I change the CSC code it will work or not?
Thanks a million in advance
I doubt changing the CSC will affect whether or not you get an update. Why not just flash a stock rom using Odin?
