Could this have been the last time I hold a Pebble Blue Galaxy S III? |
Ruh-Roh Galaxy S III fans.
If you were after a Pebble Blue handset at launch, and every forum post I've seen suggests most of you were, it looks like trouble is on the horizon.
Details after the break...
It may not have escaped the attention of perceptive readers that the Galaxy S III went on sale in Dubai earlier this week. It also may not have escaped the eye of the very attentive that only the Marble White version of the handset was available there at launch. Like many I didn't make too much of this at the time, there could have been lots of reasons for launching in only one colour (for example carrier preference - we saw this in NZ with the launch of the One X which is only being carried in white by Telecom NZ). It turns out there may be more to it than that however, and unfortunately the news isn't looking good for the significant majority of buyers who wanted the Pebble Blue version at release: there may be a worldwide shortage.
The story has unfolded throughout the week here in NZ, starting with Telecom's press release regarding S III pre-orders; they announced they are only getting the Marble White one at launch. This news didn't particularly raise hackles at that stage, given their decision to run with only the white version of the One X also.
Fast forward a few days, and the plot thickened a little more, as we saw Vodafone New Zealand announce their own launch promotion, also sans Pebble Blue S III variant.
...and then today we have news from Warehouse Stationary, who were the first in NZ to announce pre-order sales of the Galaxy S III. They confirm that they too will not be receiving stock of the Pebble Blue handset until mid-June.
We're not entirely sure about the reasons behind this apparent shortage, but enquiring minds at Geekzone have been on the case today. One source claims to have had confirmation from two major retailers that there has been a production problem with colour matching the Pebble Blue rear casing, and that production was halted while this was addressed (thanks Und3f). Alarmingly this looks consistent on face value with the reason a Telecom NZ CSR gave another sleuth from Geekzone (thanks beehappy for the information!):
Hi XXXXX
I have heard back from our Mobile Provisioning team this morning.
Samsung Global had reported there is significant demand for the SG III Pebble Blue device globally
Samsung have only started production for worldwide distribution on the SG III Pebble Blues this week, so worldwide deliveries will be affected.
Our expected delivery date is 7 June, however this a tentative date only.
Kind regards,

Naturally we're not completely convinced, knowing the sort of hearsay that CSRs often come out with rather than admit they don't know the answer, but in concert with the definite confirmation of only white handsets at release from all major carriers in NZ a consistent picture is starting to build. It's not a pretty picture. That said, we can't help but wonder whether higher priority markets like the UK will receive whatever stock is available of the Pebble Blue colour at release.
The angry backlash looks like it's already simmering at Geekzone, with some even suggesting they might take a pass on the S3 altogether unless the Pebble Blue is forthcoming ASAP.
How do you feel about this, if it comes to pass? Will this potentially affect your decision to get a Galaxy S III? Will you wait for Pebble Blue, or live with the near-universally disliked Marble White version??? Drop us a line in comments to let us know!
[UPDATE] It seems buyers in Thailand and Malaysia are also discovering that only Marble White is available for purchase at launch.
[UPDATE] Major electronics retailer JB HiFi, who were still saying they had stock of Pebble Blue incoming earlier today now confirm only Marble White available through them.
[UPDATE] Dutch site tweakers.net is reporting that production problems to the Pebble Blue rear-casing have been confirmed by Samsung Benelux PR Manager Vivian Peters. They report that Samsung has destroyed 600,000 of the rear casings and made adjustments to the production process, however the adjustments will not prevent delays in bringing Pebble Blue to that market.
[UPDATE] Samsung Sweden have confirmed the delay on their Facebook page after enquiries from people who found out about supply difficulties through AndroidNZ. They estimate it will arrive only days after the white one, and apologise for not leading with the information themselves (sorry Samsung Sweden, it wasn't our intention to land you in it, although as you've acknowledged it may have been better if the news had come from you?).
[UPDATE] ...and today Clove Technologies in the UK confirm they face delays - one day for Marble White handsets and yet to be determined length of time for the Pebble Blue.

I might try switch my order to white
ReplyDeleteYea, this annoys me...I want the blue but unsure if I should go for white just to get the damned thing.
DeleteIf it's mid June I can wait. Not entirely happy to be patient but since it may only be a week after I get back to NZ it's not as agonising as it could be. Having said that, I will look in Dubai in a weeks time just in case they now have stock of the Pebble Blue.
ReplyDeleteCan't shake the feeling that this could all have been avoided if they'd only stuck with black in the first place.
ReplyDeleteNot a problem for me because (a) I quite like the white one (need a change from dark coloured mobys); and (b) I'm planning to put it in a gel case anyway - eBay's got some reasonable looking one's pretty cheap.
DeleteI'm more concerned that a caseless SIII will be heckuva slippery when the weather turns warm.
in thailand only marble white for sale
ReplyDeleteInteresting, thanks for the info!
DeleteThe white looks pretty good - I wouldn't have a problem getting white if i was goign to order straight away. I am waiting though to see if there are any hardware bugs that the early adopters find before I risk getting one myself. This phone has to do me for 3-5 years so I want to make sure it doesn't have any hardware issues like the 3G reception on my Nexus One or the GPS issue on the Asus tablets. Issues like that are a killer because software updates can't fix them.
ReplyDeleteAh well, you'd best keep an eye on our AndroidNZ "real-user" review, you probably won't find one that exposes more faults than one generated over the course of weeks in the hands of a genuine daily user.
DeleteIf the UK does get preferential treatment for the blue model I can promise you it's only because consumers over here (are stupid enough to) pay more for their devices than anyone else ; ) Given that Germany seemed to get ICS on the Note before anyone else I would think they would be the ones getting the blue models..... saucer of milk for table two please : )
ReplyDeleteWonder if Sammy will have to flog the white ones off cheap in a couple of months.....
Now, will grab White one on launch day...The when Blue arrives 3 months later :-) and if it is any good I'll switch it then.
ReplyDeleteI'm in the UK and have ordered the white. I have had confirmation that this will be with me wednesday,
ReplyDeleteThe blue however have been give a date in mid June.
Well I don't mind waiting, but feel let down/disappointed, because of the unplanned waiting time.
ReplyDeleteI've been told by Amazon UK & phones4u in the UK that the time would be around mid/end June - which I find a little shocking.
Samsung should have nailed this, and instead have left over 47million disappointed.
If we knew before we ordered, that it would be out in July, then that would be fine - but pushing it back, especially with 0 official statements is pathetic.
Yeah I'm pretty disappointed. I pre-ordered at Warehouse Stationery and was supposed to be able to go pick up mine today. sadly it hadn't arrived this morning and they told me they would ring me when it arrives. I really don't trust them so I'll have to keep ringing throughout the day.
ReplyDeleteI'm coming from iPhone 4 (boo!) and can't wait, so this is a little disapointing, but wouldn't put me off completely. I'm due an upgrade with Vodafone in mid June, so hoping this is sorted by then. From what I've gathered, the only model available atm is the white 16GB, with the white 32GB and Blue 16/32GB coming in 2-4 weeks.
ReplyDeleteAt first I was def. gonna get the Blue 32GB, but having seen the white one up close I quite like it and would have to see the blue in real life to really decide. On the memory; wouldn't be the end of the world if I got a 16GB (if the wait was really long) as you have the option of getting SD card space.
Looking forward to more updates/reviews! Thanks.
Went into the carphone warehouse today to have a look at both of the handsets and although I have ordered a pebble blue one, I have to say that the metallic brushed finish looks pretty cheap and tacky and the marble white seems to be a better look.
ReplyDeleteI am reluctant to get the white phone though as I have always had darker handsets, I am contemplating holding on a little longer and maybe even cancelling the upgrade that I have done to see if any black models are released in a couple of months or so?
I'll wait for the blue. Of course if the delay is long enough I'll just hang on for the Galaxy S IV! lol
ReplyDeleteI have pre-ordered and pre-paid for a pebble blue 32G, and am getting pretty annoyed at waiting. If they had the 32G in white available, then I would change my color choice and just get the white, but that is not available in 32G either! Either way I have to wait. I think Samsung should give those of us who have pre-paid a free accessory pack to go with the phone as a consolation for having to wait so long!
